An In Situ Measurement System for Characterizing Orbital Debris

چکیده
This paper presents the development of an in situ measurement system known as the Debris Resistive Acoustic Grid Orbital Navy/NASA Sensor (DRAGONS). The DRAGONS system is designed to detect impacts caused by particles ranging from 50 μm to 1 mm at both low-earth and geostationary orbits. DRAGONS utilizes a combination of low-cost sensor technologies to facilitate accurate measurements and approximations of the size, velocity, and angle of impacting micrometeoroids and orbital debris (MMOD). Two thin layers of kapton sheets with resistive traces are used to detect the changes in resistance that are directly proportional to the impacting force caused by the fasttraveling particles. Four polyvinylidene fluoride-based sensors are positioned in the back of each kapton sheet to measure acoustic strain caused by an impact. The electronic hardware module that controls all operations employs a low-power, modular, and compact design that enables it to be installed as a low-resource load on a host satellite. Laboratory results demonstrate that in addition to having the ability to detect an impact event, the DRAGONS system can determine impact location, speed, and angle of impact with a mean error of 1.4 cm, 0.2 km/s, and 5°. The DRAGONS system could be deployed as an add-on subsystem of a payload to enable a real-time, in-depth study of the properties of MMOD.

Estimation of Orbital Parameters of Broken-up Objects from In-situ Debris Measurement
The risk of space debris is an important issue for the long-term sustainability of outer space activities. Even sub-millimeter-size debris still could cause a fatal damage on spacecraft. Since such tiny debris cannot be followed up or tracked from the ground, so that in-situ measurement is essential to obtain knowledge necessary to design spacecraft. However, measurements are quite limited in t...

The contribution made by orbiting solid rocket motors (SRMs) to the orbital debris environment is both potentially significant and insufficiently studied. A combination of rocket motor design and the mechanisms of the combustion process can lead to the emission of sufficiently large and numerous by-products to warrant assessment of their contribution to the orbital debris environment. These par...
متن کاملAn ontological architecture for orbital debris data (First published Aug. 2015)
The orbital debris problem presents an opportunity for inter-agency and international cooperation toward the mutually beneficial goals of debris prevention, mitigation, remediation, and improved space situational awareness (SSA). Achieving these goals requires sharing orbital debris and other SSA data. Toward this, I present an ontological architecture for the orbital debris domain, taking step...
متن کاملOptimizing orbital debris monitoring with optical telescopes
Continued growth in the orbital debris population has renewed concerns over the long-term use of space. Debris poses an increasing risk to manned space missions and operational satellites; however, the majority of debris large enough to cause catastrophic damage is not being tracked and maintained in a catalog. Passive optical systems hold great promise to provide a cost-effective means to moni...
متن کاملOn Dynamic Analysis and Control of a Novel Orbital Debris Disposer
The removal of orbital debris is a special on-orbit service that gains interest. In this paper, we present the novel idea of an orbital debris disposer, based on a number of cooperating robotic free-flyers equipped with a flexible surface, such as a net. A unidimensional model of the system is studied as a proof of concept, to help in the understanding of system dynamics and physical constraint...
